It's All About The Niceness!
Soundman, Deejay, Radio Presenter & Engineer
My first gig was in 1970, in those days you went anywhere there was music being played so house parties and shubeens were all the rage back then. Often a guy/gal with anything that can be played with at least one box was good enough to call yourself a sound man/woman. Many a time in house parties it would be one box on top of a cabinet or walldrobe because the power was so weak that people standing in front of the speaker box would drown the sound coming out of the box. I walked with many guys who I knew and so you would support them when they got a dance to play. I did so for a while and then decided to start off for myself. I carried boxes for sounds usually to get in for free and I got further to play music for others. I was spinning tunes for Sir Higgins a local heavyweight in South London until his son was old enough to see the record deck and my present was my first 18 inch speaker as a parting gift. I built my first bass box and when it partnered my 12 inch speaker I was king of the ring. (all soundmen think they are the best) The work started to flow LOVE TKO formerly known as Challenger was busy. I had others telling me that the name was taken and I was fed up because I never heard them play or never did I see a leaflet with their name Challenger Sound on it. We played dances every weekend, Nightmoves, La Prison, Shady Grove, Kings on the Rye, Podium, Dougies, Crystals Banqueting Suite, Jet Promotions & Spots Club kept me going.
I have been a member of London Notting Hill Carnival for over 30 years where my sound system LOVE TKO has enjoyed the love of the crowds for many years
I was in the Radio business albeit on pirate starting with Solar and I stayed for many years on Starpoint Radio. I got my first legal show as the early morning breakfast presenter on WNK 103.3 the first black radio station to win a legal license for London. I was the outside broadcast engineer for Choice FM. I was an active member of a winning license application for FLR (First Love Radio) in South East London. I became the engineer and studio builder of www.soul24-7.com until it closed down so by then I decided to build my own station named www.Ramjamradio.com that ran for 21 years. I took a break only realising I was not ready for carpet slippers and the TV remote just yet so I took on doing 3 shows a week on mixcloud.com. I have a little more time these days so after surfing the internet for places I was attracted to www.Chaaaawaaa.com . After a trial show on the station it now seems I have found a seat behind the microphone to spread the love.
All those years ago I have delved heavily in Reggae & Soul music but my love for roots & culture has always been close to the surface. My move to www Chaaawaaa.com allows me to provide a full show based on sweet roots & culture reggae music.
Roots & culture has expanded through the years but it is still recognised from then until now. The message of peace love & unity and no bad language has kept reggae firmly rooted to the ground. You don’t have to have dreads to be a Rasta neither your race nor background makes any difference when you are with us. Everyone is welcome.
